The Coqui: A Story of Love, Culture, & Puerto Rican Pride
Named for its distinctive nighttime call, “co-quí,” this little frog represents the spirit, beauty, and heart of Puerto Rico.
The Taino legend of the coquí tells of a goddess who fell in love with Coquí, the chief's son. After he was taken away by the deity of chaos, Juracán (Hurricane), and in her grief she created the coquí frog to forever call out his name, "Co-kee! Co-kee!" as a symbol of her enduring love and loss.
The coquí frog's call has become a powerful symbol of Puerto Rican identity and resilience. It reflects the enduring spirit of love and the cultural heritage of the Taino people. The legend illustrates how folklore can connect generations and preserve cultural narratives.
We named our restaurant Coquí Kitchen because the coquí represents so much to us. It’s a connection to our roots, our culture, and the traditions that make Puerto Rican food so special. Just like the coquí’s unmistakable call, we want every dish we make to bring a little piece of Puerto Rico to your home, bringing people together through the flavors, memories, and love that make our culture unique.
